Hyderabad/New Delhi, June 27: In a symbolic gesture highlighting the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States, the Telangana government has officially renamed a key road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad's Financial District as "Donald Trump Avenue."

The road, located at Nanakramguda, was inaugurated earlier this week during the Freedom 250 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and other senior officials.

Responding to the tribute, US President Donald Trump expressed his gratitude in a post on his Truth Social platform, describing the gesture as an "unprecedented honour."

"The new Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, India  The first U.S. President to ever be honoured in this way. Thank you!" Trump wrote while sharing photographs from the inauguration ceremony.

The Telangana government said the renaming reflects Hyderabad's expanding role in strengthening India US relations, particularly in technology, innovation, aerospace, defence, and investment. The avenue is situated near the US Consulate and several major American technology companies operating in the city's Financial District.

Officials said the initiative is also part of a broader effort to create internationally recognisable landmarks in Hyderabad while reinforcing the city's image as a global investment and innovation hub.

However, the move has also triggered political debate. Opposition voices and some political parties questioned the decision to name a public road after a foreign political leader, arguing that such recognition should instead be reserved for distinguished Indian personalities. Supporters, on the other hand, defended the decision, saying it reflects Hyderabad's close economic and diplomatic ties with the United States and acknowledges the city's importance in bilateral cooperation.

The road naming has drawn significant attention both in India and abroad after Trump's public acknowledgement, making it one of the most discussed diplomatic gestures between Hyderabad and the United States in recent years.
