New York/Geneva: The United Nations has issued a strong statement condemning rising attacks on journalists worldwide, calling them a direct assault on the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
“Attacks on journalists are attacks on the fundamental right to freedom of expression. They are unacceptable and must stop,” the UN said in a message released on Tuesday.
The statement comes at a time when reporters in conflict zones and politically sensitive regions face growing threats, ranging from physical violence and arbitrary detention to online harassment and targeted killings. The UN stressed that reliable information is more essential than ever, particularly in an era dominated by disinformation, political polarization, and war.
“Protecting press freedom is more important than ever,” the message read, underlining that journalists including those risking their lives to expose harsh realities must not be treated as targets.
According to UNESCO data, more than 55 journalists were killed in 2023 while carrying out their professional duties. Many more continue to face harassment, imprisonment, and intimidation, especially in regions marred by armed conflict and authoritarian crackdowns.
Rights groups have consistently warned that silencing the media undermines democracy and accountability. The UN reiterated that governments and authorities have an obligation to ensure the safety of journalists and to bring perpetrators of attacks to justice.
The global body’s call comes amid mounting international concern over the shrinking space for press freedom. From Gaza to Myanmar, Afghanistan to Mexico, journalists continue to pay the price for speaking truth to power.
The UN emphasized that defending media workers is not only about protecting individuals but also about safeguarding the public’s right to information. “Without press freedom, societies lose transparency, accountability, and the ability to hold power in check,” the statement said.
The appeal is expected to put renewed pressure on member states to strengthen mechanisms that guarantee the safety of media professionals and uphold international commitments to free expression.
