Ambassador hails India as one of world’s most dynamic economies, confident of closure soon
After nearly two decades of negotiations, the long-discussed India–EU free trade pact may finally be within reach. Denmark’s ambassador to India says both sides have found common ground, calling the Indian economy one of the most dynamic in the world.
The India–European Union free trade talks, launched in 2007 and bogged down by years of stalemate, may be nearing a decisive breakthrough. Denmark’s Ambassador to India, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, says the agreement is “within reach,” marking a rare moment of genuine momentum in a process long mired in disputes over tariffs, market access, and environmental rules.
The shift reflects changing priorities on both sides. Europe is keen to diversify its trade partnerships in an unpredictable global economy, while India is stepping forward as one of the fastest-growing major economies, backed by a vast consumer base and growing manufacturing strength.
Kristensen also pushed back against recent critical remarks about India’s economy, calling it “far from dead” and among the most dynamic in the world. His public confidence carries weight, particularly with Denmark holding the EU’s rotating presidency and steering the talks.
While the ambassador hopes to close the deal before the presidency ends later this year, he concedes it could spill into next year. Still, his choice to go on record with optimism suggests that the toughest political hurdles may already have been cleared.
If signed, the pact would open the door to greater investment, faster technology transfer, and stronger strategic ties. It would be more than a trade deal—it would be a strategic partnership built for a shifting global order.
